Being an entrepreneur isn't just about having a great product or service—it's fundamentally about having the right mindset. At Pink Woolf, we've learned that through experience.
What I say is this: “If you want to be an entrepreneur, go right ahead and do it. It’s much easier than you think.” It’s like everything else; to get it done, you just start and go on.
The Best Place to Start
Start with something really simple. When I began writing this article, I was excited by the idea that starting a business is straightforward. But hold on—let’s not get ahead of ourselves. If you’re aiming to create a revolutionary communication tool that needs to be implanted in people’s heads, you'll need a lot of resources.
That's not what I'm talking about here. I’m talking about an ordinary person living in a rented apartment, tired of their everyday job, dreaming of breaking free from "the system" to enjoy the freedom of working for themselves.
If that’s you, what you need is an idea—preferably a simple one that excites you. Take Just Eat, for example. It's a simple concept: pick up food from a restaurant and deliver it to a customer’s door. You could start a similar business by partnering with local restaurants, printing a few leaflets to explain your service, and delivering them door to door.
Take a Trip Inside the Consumer Mind
In the world of advertising, it's all about understanding what consumers want, need, and desire.
Want. Need. Desire.
These three elements are the key triggers that drive people to make purchases. Notice that they all tap into emotions. Your challenge is to discover something that resonates deeply enough with people that they're willing to invest in it.
If I were in your shoes, I'd set "desire" aside for now. Products driven by desire often come with hefty price tags. Instead, focus on addressing what people genuinely want or need.
Start by exploring the essentials: food, shelter, water, companionship, security, employment, self-esteem. Pick a category that sparks your interest and dive in.
Consider Addressing a Widespread Issue
There are activities we enjoy and those we prefer to avoid. Consider what tasks people would rather not do to obtain an item from your chosen category. Take Just Eat, for instance—they recognized that many people are exhausted after work and may not want to cook. So, they innovated by delivering prepared meals to customers' doors.
Think about the countless tasks people enjoy versus those they'd rather skip. Imagine not having to haul your suitcase at the airport, walk your dog, clean your oven, or even commute to work.
Do you see the pattern emerging? It's about understanding people's preferences and aversions. Personally, I will gladly pay someone to thoroughly clean our oven annually because I detest doing it myself. In return for handling a task I dislike, he enjoys a comfortable home and owns a vacation property in Spain.
Steve Jobs applied this mindset when founding Apple. He sought ways to make computing accessible to everyone, with a core principle of simplicity that defines all Apple products to this day.
This is How Your Entrepreneur Kick-Start Kit Works
- Identify a Widespread Issue: Find a problem that needs solving. Look for tasks people dislike doing and think about how you can make their lives easier.
- Define Your Target Audience: Know precisely who needs this solution and why. Understanding their motivations is key to providing a service they'll value.
- Develop a Simple Solution: Keep your solution straightforward. Complexity can be a barrier to both implementation and customer adoption.
- Promote Your Solution: Inform those in need about your innovative solution. Marketing is crucial to getting your idea off the ground.
